The legacy of Pál Juhász-Nagy

The namesake of our Doctoral School, Pál Juhász-Nagy (1935–1993), was a biologist, ecologist, university professor, corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and recipient of the Széchenyi Prize, and one of the defining figures of twentieth-century Hungarian ecology. He maintained strong ties to Debrecen throughout his life: he was born and educated here, began his university studies at the University of Debrecen, and spent an important early period of his academic career, from 1957 to 1969, teaching and conducting research at the Institute of Botany of Kossuth Lajos University, a predecessor of today’s University of Debrecen.

His scientific work fundamentally shaped ecological thinking in Hungary. As a pioneer in establishing the theoretical foundations of supra-individual biology, he investigated the principles governing biological organisation at the level of populations and communities. He made major contributions to developing a coherent conceptual and methodological framework for ecology, introducing biomathematical and information-theoretical approaches, and advancing the quantitative analysis of biological community structure. His work promoted a view of ecology not merely as the description of natural phenomena, but as a rigorous science based on clearly formulated questions, measurable relationships and testable models.

The Juhász-Nagy Pál Doctoral School is proud to carry his name and intellectual legacy. The study of biodiversity and ecological systems, quantitative approaches to biological questions, and scientific thinking that crosses disciplinary boundaries remain central values of our research and doctoral education today.
